Are the Sabbath and Holy Days Done Away?

(Copyright 08-13-2025) by Earl L. Henn (Charlotte, North Carolina)   For centuries, people have tried to find ways to convince themselves and others that Christians are not required to observe the Sabbath and holy days. A favorite scriptural target in this quest is Colossians 2:16-17. Some teach that a heretical group of Judaizers in the Colossian church was trying to enforce obedience to Jewish practices, such as the laws of clean and unclean meats and the holy days. Under such a scenario, they argue, Paul is telling the Colossians that they did not have to do these things, and further, they had no need to be concerned […]

The Duality of Prophecy

(Copyright) by Earl L. Henn (Charlotte, North Carolina)  Many people find the subject of prophecy to be the most fascinating aspect of Bible study, and they eagerly pursue it. Some scour the newspapers, books, magazines, and television and radio news for the latest tidbit that fulfills their favorite prophecies. Unfortunately, few understand the vital keys to understanding the Bible’s prophecies, and thus many of them are wildly misunderstood. Among the keys to understanding prophecy is the fact that most prophecy is dual in nature. Throughout Scripture, we see duality in many things, often a physical reality that prefigures or corresponds to a spiritual […]

Does Paul Condemn Observing God’s Holy Days?

(Copyright) by Earl L. Henn (Charlotte, North Carolina)  Through the centuries, theologians have devised many arguments to do away with the observance of God’s holy days. They propose that various scriptures in the New Testament obviate the need for Christians to keep the days that God’s law specifically says are holy to Him (Leviticus 23:2).A favorite target of theirs is Galatians 4:9-10, in which Paul expresses his frustration with the Galatians because they had returned to certain religious practices. He calls these practices “weak and beggarly elements,” telling them they were again “in bondage” to them. In verse 10, he defines these […]

Was God’s Law Nailed to the Cross?

(Copyright) by Earl L. Henn (Charlotte, North Carolina)  In their struggle to find a New Testament scripture that supports their misconception that God’s law is “done away,” many people point to Colossians 2:14 to “prove” that Christ nailed the law of God to the cross. In fact, this verse becomes a major linchpin in their fallacious argument that Christians are not required to keep God’s “harsh Old Testament law.” Proponents of such a teaching say that the “handwriting of requirements [ordinances, KJV]” refers to the law “that was against us.” They further claim that Christ “took it out of the way” or abolished the […]

Why We Must Put Out Leaven

by Earl L. Henn (Charlotte, North Carolina)   Years ago, I had a favorite question to ask ministers about the Feast of Unleavened Bread. “Why must we go through the physical act of putting leaven out of our homes before the Days of Unleavened Bread, but we are not required to be physically circumcised?” I never received an answer. There are many parallels between circumcision and deleavening our homes. Both of these physical acts demonstrate a spiritual principle. Circumcision symbolizes an attitude of heart and mind (Romans 2:26-29), and deleavening our homes symbolizes putting sin out of our lives (I Corinthians 5:6-7). The New […]
