Your Love Defends Me

A Health Plan You Can Live With

(Copyright) by Wayne Schatzle (West Chester, Ohio)  In an effort to avoid being cut open and having my heart worked on like so many of my friends of late I have decided to take some drastic measures in my life and be smart in what I shove into my mouth. I have read several books on the subject, and I am sharing with you some of the highlights from my studies. Listed are some of the changes I am trying to make in my life. If you are content in “living to eat” and don’t care if you wind up […]

The Tragic State of National and World News

(Copyright 2024) by Richard Markland (London, Ohio)  Is it any wonder the majority of people are turned off and tuned out by today’s news? Meaningful and extensive in-depth coverage is nonexistent because America’s networks cherry pick what they consider is newsworthy. The mainstream media has gone lamestream by avoiding significant news that is taking place globally, because America is domesticated in its mindset of what is considered relevant. You can hardly blame anyone for not watching news that is mostly insignificant tabloid fluff. The way it is presented is accepted as the status quo, even though trivial, mundane, boring and […]

The First of the Unleaveneds

(Copyright 08-02-2022) by Rich Traver (Clifton, Colorado)  A Poorly rendered expression found in Mark 14:12 creates a degree of Confusion among Believers.  What day is Mark’s expression intending to identify? There are times in the New Testament, particularly as it involves the observance of such an important event as the Passover, when identifying an exact day can be especially important.  Now, if there weren’t varying opinions as to when Passover ought to be observed, then perhaps which day, or days, being referred to in this Gospel narrative, wouldn’t pose the question that it does. Translational IssuesBut translators, being insufficiently familiar with the […]

Carried About by Every Wind

(Copyright 08-27-2025) by Richard T. Ritenbaugh (Charlotte, North Carolina)   In Ephesians 4:11-16, the apostle Paul famously explains the reasons for Christ’s gift of the ministry to His church: “for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry” and “for the edifying of the body of Christ” (verse 12). This educational and supportive element is necessary because those He calls out of this world have been steeped for decades in the ideas and behaviors of a society cut off from God. They must learn God’s truth and begin living His way. As Paul writes later in the chapter, they must “be […]

Fully Man and Fully God?

(Copyright 09-26-2025) by John W. Ritenbaugh (Lancaster, South Carolina)  Will someone please explain how a person can be more than the sum of his parts? It seems illogical, when we consider all the parts of something separately, that a fully constructed whole could be greater than the combined value of its constituent pieces. Although this is, of course, a word game, there is a serious purpose behind it. Some in the church of God have begun to doubt its traditional teaching regarding the physical/spiritual makeup of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Many may not be aware that this issue was a significant controversy […]

The Post-Christian Age in America

(Copyright 12-01-2023) by James Lloyd (Medford, Oregon)   The Bible told us it would come when it said there would be a “Falling Away [from the truth]” (II Thessalonians 2:9), but very few saw the form this “departure” from the Gospel would take, as the attached humorous cartoon shows. The Scriptures also describe it as a “Snare,” but the practice of breaking free to pursue unrestricted, selfish interests is essentially when Flesh and Blood pursuits unexpectedly rise above Spiritual and moral considerations. Jesus Christ said this time would be similar to Sodom and Gomorrah, as that account formed the vivid historical example […]

The Human Foot – A Feat of Engineering

(Copyright 12-15-2022) by David Rives (Lewisburg, Tennessee)  Did you know you were designed to run around barefoot? Genesis tells us that originally Adam and Eve were created naked. It wasn’t until after sin that clothes—and eventually shoes—came into being. But when we shed our shoes, we see that God’s design is the best. An incredible 25% of the bones in your body are found in your feet. These bones form three arches; the transverse, medial longitudinal, and lateral longitudinal arches found behind our toes and on the right and left sides of our feet. These arches beat the design of man-made […]

Spare the Rod, Save the Child

(Copyright) by Catherine C. Kroeger (Brewster, Massachusetts)  The American Journal of Preventive Medicine carries a report of a study on corporal punishment of children. The research was conducted by a medical team at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. One discovery was that spanking with an object rather than the hand raised by nine times the likelihood of other forms of abuse. Parents who spanked frequently were far more likely to beat, burn or shake their children. Pediatrician Adam Zolotor, lead author of the study, wrote “Parents get angry when they’re spanking, and it’s not working. . . If […]

Why George Washington University Should Celebrate Its Namesake

(Copyright 2022) by Eddie Hyatt (Grapevine, Texas)   The Washington Post recently raised eyebrows after publishing an op-ed that called for renaming George Washington University in order to address systemic racism and inequality. Such rhetoric, however, reveals a very limited understanding of history and is at odds with the nation’s most highly regarded abolitionists and Civil Rights leaders. For example, no one was more scathing in their verbal attacks on slavery and racial inequality than the former slave and abolitionist, Frederick Douglass. Yet, after much study and investigation, Douglass acquired a very high regard for Washington and America’s founders. In a July […]

Pulsating Discs from the Sky?

(Copyright 06-02-2008) by Jonathan Gray (New Zealand)  Attention. Aliens are coming to abduct all the good looking and sexy people. You will be safe, I’m just emailing to say goodbye. I chuckled as I read that email from my friend and colleague John Paige. Whenever John phones, you can be sure we’ll end up laughing about something. If you didn’t know, laughter is good for the heart. How’s your heart? Anyway, speaking of aliens, I mean the extraterrestrial kind, have you heard about the group of alleged ancient astronauts who supposedly dropped out of the sky and left behind some pulsating discs in caves […]

Was Paul a False Apostle?

(Copyright 09-17-2025) by David C. Grabbe (Charlotte, North Carolina)   “Go, for [Paul] is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel.” (Acts 9:15). In his book, Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis makes a useful observation: The devil always sends errors into the world in pairs—pairs of opposites. And he always encourages us to spend a lot of time thinking which is the worse. You see why, of course? He relies on your extra dislike of the one error to draw you gradually into the opposite one. An unusual conversation reminded me of this quotation because the exchange involved an […]

Prophecy Unfolding

(Copyright 2023) by Dwight Fleming (Oroville, California)  While there are those ministers who make light of attempts by others to better understand the prophecies found in the Bible, NEVER underestimate the power of God to grant understanding to those who seek God with a humble heart.  Don’t let their lack of faith rob you of your reward. “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6). How does God reward those who earnestly seek Him? Recall the dream of Nebuchadnezzar which he could not […]

Miracle of One

(Copyright 04-28-2018) by Richard Frates (Easly, South Carolina)  There will never be another you! That reality is why death is so fearful. There will never be another me or you. It is evident to all that the future guarantees we will all turn to dust and fade into darkness; the memory of you will be extinguished. But those who believe God and salvation through the Son of God, will always be remembered. Proverbs 14:32 “Even in death the righteous have a refuge.” Psalm 116:15 “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. The Miracle of One […]

The Leaven of 1 Corinthians 5

(Copyright 05-19-2025) by Gregory Diaz (Paterson, New Jersey)  In Paul’s first letter to the Corinthian church, he addresses a type of fornication “not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife” (1 Cor 5:1). He tells them that, rather than mourning, they were “puffed up” and “glorying” over the man’s deed (verses 2 and 6). The seemingly clear and simple view is that the Corinthians, rather than judging him, were glorying in their tolerance of the man’s egregious sin. However, if we consider the message and example of Jesus, this non-judgmental treatment of a […]

Why Did Noah Curse Canaan?

(Copyright) by BibleStudy.org (Farmington Hills, Michigan)  What vile sin did Canaan perform on righteous Noah that earned him being cursed? The curse took place sometime after the flood when Noah took up farming. After harvesting the grapes from his vineyard, he made wine and got drunk. His inebriated condition led him to remove all his clothes and take a nap on his tent floor (Genesis 9:20 – 21). Ham, the youngest son who was at least 100 years old (see Genesis 5:32), then discovers his father Noah sleeping naked. He informs his two brothers who then discreetly cover him with a garment […]

The year the lions lay down with the Lamb

(Copyright 2015) by Curtis Dahlgren (Stephenson, Michigan)   [MANY YEARS FROM NOW, to coin a phrase, people will still be talking about these awful times – not so much awful for the weather (acts of God) but for the awful acts of men: mass shootings and children beheaded, kidnappings and sex slavery, executions, and torture, and then, besides that, WAR. Now imagine you’re in the year 2525 – after the “Big Gulp” and the big changes.] Grandpa, tell us again about the bad old days.Well, Ismail, the 21st century started out really, really sad, but . . . Did kids really get shot […]

About Keeping the Sabbath or Not

(Copyright 10-16-2023) by Jeffrey Caldwell (Arkansas)  A current article in World Net Dailyhttp://worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=57978notes: Greg Laurie, a WND columnist and senior pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, Calif., one of the eight largest Protestant churches in America, maintains it’s wrong for Christians to observe Saturday, claiming Jesus and the apostles never taught anyone to keep the Sabbath. He says it’s the only one of the Ten Commandments not specifically repeated in the New Testament. “Of all the New Testament lists of sins, ‘breaking the Sabbath’ is never mentioned,” Laurie said. “That is because it was given to the Jews, not the non-Jews.” Back […]

The Number One Problem No One Wants to Talk About

(Copyright 2006) by Richard Markland (London, Ohio) When my wife, Linda, died in 2005, a number of things changed in my life. The area I am more aware of is the number one problem facing the country when it comes to health. Linda weighed 50 lbs. when she died as a result of colon cancer. It was a slow agonizing death, and I am still coming to terms with it to this day. It has been a life altering experience and has made me more aware of cause and effect when it comes to disease and physical health. The one area Linda […]

Power of Life and Death

(Copyright 2010) by Jamie McNab (England)  You will recollect that we said before that our words, our tongues, and our ability to speak and communicate, really is a gift.  Unfortunately, of course, it can be abused, like any other natural force.  You could take electricity for example: you can light your house, cook your meals and so on, but wrongly used, electricity can burn and kill.  We said in our first discussion, that we should “Guard our Lips”.  Last week we entitled the message: “Choose Words of Life”.  Today, we are heading this message as: “Power of Life and Death”. Proverbs […]

Wisdom in Being Honest

(Copyright 2023) by Zac Poonen (Bangalore, India)  True Christian fellowship must be based on light. We can walk in true and deep fellowship with one another only if we are willing to walk in the light (1 John 1:7). This involves a willingness to be ourselves with each other – avoiding all sham and hypocrisy. This is how God intends Christians to walk with one another. Remember, the first sin publicly judged by God in the early Church was hypocrisy (see the story of Ananias and Sapphira recorded in Acts 5:1-14). “The world is full of lonely, tense, fear-ridden and neurotic […]

What is Death?

(Copyright 08-30-2025) by Rod Reynolds (Wentzville, Missouri)  Dear Friends and Brethren, Even when we face sickness and death, God is aware of our plight, and if we maintain godly faith, we are safely in his hands. Scripture tells us, “And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation” (Hebrews 9:27-28). Jesus said, “For as the Father raises the dead and makes alive, even so the Son of man […]

The Corruption that is Called Christmas

(Copyright) by Jeffrey Caldwell (Arkansas)   Eve, the first woman, meant well … at least she felt she meant well … reaching for the forbidden fruit. Satan’s deceitful and misleading spiel had convinced her. Nobody had ever lied to her … she wasn’t prepared for that. After all, “… she saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her…” (Genesis 3:6), can’t fault the reasoning. Adam knew better, he remembered God had said it was not to be eaten, that death would be the consequence. But he went along with […]

Why Was Jesus Born in Bethlehem?

(Copyright) by BibleStudy.org (Farmington Hills, Michigan)  Why was Jesus born in Bethlehem when his parents, Mary and Joseph, lived in Nazareth (Luke 2:39)? The primary reason the birth of Jesus took place in Bethlehem was to fulfill the prophecy given by the minor prophet Micah. He stated the following: And you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, you being least among the thousands of Judah, out of you He (Jesus) shall come forth (be born) to Me, that is to become Ruler in Israel . . . (Micah 5:2, HBFV throughout). One of the most fascinating facts about the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem is how God […]

This is the final column for now in a series based on a book review of “The Most Brilliant Thoughts of All Time” by John M. Shanahan — who also created the “Hooked on Phonics” program. Immanuel’s Priceless Gift

(Copyright 00-00-2013) by Brenda Branson (Hanson, Kentucky)  “One raw winter night a man heard an irregular thumping sound against the kitchen storm door. He went to a window and watched as tiny, shivering sparrows, attracted to the evident warmth inside, beat in vain against the glass. Touched, the farmer bundled up and trudged through the fresh snow to open the barn for the struggling birds. He turned on the lights, tossed some hay in the corner, and sprinkled a trail of saltine crackers to direct them to the barn. But the sparrows, which had scattered in all directions when he […]

Prophecy Stinks!

(Copyright 2023) by Dwight Fleming (Oroville, California)  We all have heard of prophecies or predictions that were made by so-called prophets or “holy men” which failed to come to pass.  Usually, in the beginning of their rise to fame, their lofty and zealous prognostications with clever and meticulous details tickled many curious and gullible ears.   But once their spellbinding, enticing forecasts of doom failed to materialize, their reputations would quickly take a nose-dive into the garbage heap with a foul stench reaching to heaven.  A classic example is the famous prediction of Christ’s return in 1844 by William Miller.  It has […]

Victory Over Evil Thoughts

(Copyright 2023) by Zac Poonen (Bangalore, India)  Every young person is sooner or later tempted by unclean thoughts. The sexual urge being stronger and more aggressive in men than in women, men face this problem much more than women do. In Mark 7:21, Jesus listed evil thoughts as the first things that proceed from the heart of men. The hearts of all unconverted men are equally wicked and so the description Jesus gave is true of all. Unclean thoughts plague the mind of the morally upright man as much as they do the mind of the adulterer – even though […]

Tears & Laughter

(Copyright 03-29-24) by David Antion (Pasadena, California)  There is a story about two philosophers. Each morning one would come out his front door look around begin to laugh. And each morning the other would come out of his front door and begin to wail and cry. It is so true that crying and laughter are natural to humans depending on what we see, how we look at things, and how we feel inside ourselves. Little infants will cry and as they look at Mommy’s or Daddy’s face they might giggle. The Bible says that “Jesus wept” in its shortest verse of John […]

“Twice Dead” Same Sex Marriage, Supreme Court Judges

(Copyright 05-24-2025) by Richard Frates (Easly, South Carolina)  Who Blasphemy God, Mock Marriage, and Impose Devil-Worship. Honoring what God decreed evil by law is “State-Devil-Worship” Leviticus 20:13. Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito abhorred the “same sex marriage” constitutional ruling.   Judges deceitfully use the “Fourteenth Amendment” of the constitution as justification to make their diabolical “same sex marriage” constitutional ruling. It is obvious to those who are not Devil-Media possessed: The writers of the “equal protection of law” would not deny the God given distinction between male and female and that marriage is between a […]

Choose Words of Life

(Copyright 2010) by Jamie McNab (England)  Right brethren, we are continuing with a study that we began last week.  We were talking about our words, about our language and about our ability to communicate through words.  And we said last week that if you think about it, animals sort of communicate a little bit, they bark, cheep or chirp, or do similar things.  But human beings are very much different. We have words with which we can convey ideas and thoughts.  That is very much a characteristic of our God, of our Father and of Jesus Christ our Lord.  And […]

Commencement address time again (but can the grads read?)

(Copyright 05-03-2025) by Curtis Dahlgren (Stephenson, Michigan)  “IT WILL COME AS NO SURPRISE to anyone who has listened to a commencement speech in the last ten years to know that a spirit of elitism has been fostered among students – and deliberately – by politicians. Not so well known is the fact that many professors pander this same line to their classes, telling them how smart, how well-educated they are. “The words of politician and professor combine to reinforce the usual late-teenage ignorance; students of that age already assert their self-superiority. In short, too many professors pander to their audience and […]

Flesh-Eating Bacteria Cases on the Rise: Here Are the Symptoms

(Copyright 08-18-2025) by Jason Darrow (Email)  Every year, around 150 to 200 severe cases of Vibrio vulnificus are reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with most cases occurring during the summer when more people are swimming in the ocean and eating raw oysters. Some people can also contract necrotizing fasciitis by eating raw oysters or seafood contaminated with the bacteria. (How about some sushi my friends?)  According to the CDC, one can reduce their risks of infection by avoiding salty or brackish water when they have a wound from a surgery, piercing, or tattoo. The wound should also […]

Update on Francis

As previously reported, Francis was in a bad Motor Bike Taxi accident on his way back to boarding school on Friday.  He was diagnosed to have a broken neck. Sengera House

(Copyright 05-16-2025) by William P. Goff (Tuckerton, New Jersey)  Greetings Brethren, Hope all of you are well, as we continue our count to the Feast of Pentecost. This whole creation continues groaning as do we, His First Fruits, as we eagerly wait and hope for our Lord’s return. (Romans 8:22-23). As mentioned in previous mailings, all the orphans at Sengera House (and a number of orphans who are living in the bush with a Grandparent) are back in school, and this is wonderful.  But after paying over $7,000 for school fees and also making a number of repairs at the orphanage, our […]

God Is Gracious

New Covenant Law

(Copyright 08-24-2025) by Rod Reynolds (Wentzville, Missouri)  Dear Friends and Brethren, It’s commonly taught among professing Christian churches that some or all of the commandments of God, especially the ten commandments given from Mt. Sinai, are not applicable to Christians. Christ, we are told, has “replaced the law,” including the ten commandments, thus they are no longer obligatory for Christians. An example of this general idea is found in how the Jamieson Fausset Brown Bible Commentary interprets the meaning of Colossians 2:14: “The law (including especially the moral law, wherein lay the chief difficulty in obeying) is abrogated to the believer….” “The […]
