Tears & Laughter
(Copyright 03-29-24) by David Antion (Pasadena, California) There is a story about two philosophers. Each morning one would come out his front door look around begin to laugh. And each morning the other would come out of his front door and begin to wail and cry. It is so true that crying and laughter are natural to humans depending on what we see, how we look at things, and how we feel inside ourselves. Little infants will cry and as they look at Mommy’s or Daddy’s face they might giggle. The Bible says that “Jesus wept” in its shortest verse of John […]
Our Passover & Unleavened Bread
(Copyright 04-10-2025) by David Antion (Pasadena, California) The Churches of God have traditionally placed emphasis on the death of Christ – observing the “night in which He was betrayed.” We do it “in remembrance” of Him as He instructed (1 Corinthians 11:24) “for as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes” (v. 26 NAS). Editor’s Note:There is nothing in scripture anywhere showing that Christ changed the date of Passover to be celebrated before his death. All Christ did on the night He was betrayed was to introduce the […]
What is Grace?
(Copyright 2022) by David Antion (Pasadena, California) Is there any word more misunderstood and abused and perverted than this word “grace?” Yet it is one of the most important words in the Bible. For this reason, I want to feature this topic in our Search the Scriptures emails. The English word “grace” is always a translation of the Greek word “charis”. However, the Greek word is used over 170 times but not all of those times translated as “grace.” It is translated in several other ways that we shall see. The primary meaning seems to denote a […]
Search the Scriptures
(Copyright) by David Antion (Pasadena, California) Most people read the Apostle Paul’s writings and are thrilled to understand his deeper views into Christ’s sacrifice, atonement, resurrection, and the meaning of all of this to us as those chosen by God to receive salvation. But most people don’t think about what is not in Paul’s writings. We might find this a little curious as to why he says nothing about Jesus’ preaching the Kingdom of God. This phrase (KOG) occurs 51 in the gospels, but only 8 times in all of Paul’s 14 letters. Paul never mentions that Jesus cast out demons, or […]
The Deception of “Heartburn”
(Copyright) by David Antion (Pasadena, California) What Your Doctor or Pharmacy Probably Won’t Tell You Have you noticed the number of antacids, acid blockers, and aids for indigestion on your local over the counter medicine shelf? They range from Tums to Rolaids, from Pepcid-AC to Tagamet, from Mylanta to Pepto-Bismol. Americans are having a devil of a time with indigestion it appears. And why? Mostly because people eat “dead” foods. What do I mean by “dead foods”? Let’s take the example of an apple. Place it on your kitchen counter and in a few days, it will begin to digest itself […]
The Feast and God’s People
(Copyright) by David Antion (Pasadena, California) In ancient times the feast was about rejoicing in the fear of the ETERNAL. It was called the feast of the harvest, or feast of Ingathering, Feast of Tabernacles (Tents), or simply,” the feast.” The harvest was complete. Food was plenteous. The work was done, and it was time to rejoice before the Eternal and give thanks to Him and learn to fear to disappoint Him. People in Israel took their tithes of the land—food, wine, and animals– to the temple and ate in the place that God chose to place His Name — the […]
Protecting Against “Free Radicals”
(Copyright) by David Antion (Pasadena, California) “Free Radicals” is a term that sounds like Muslim terrorists being let out of prison. But that’s not what I’m talking about here. Perhaps the best way to describe a “free radical” is to explain the difference between carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO). As you probably know carbon dioxide is what you breathe out and is relatively harmless in your body. That’s because the O2 has a balance of electrons. When an atom has an imbalance of electrons it attacks a molecule in some organ in the body to take an electron […]
Joy, Gladness, Rejoicing
(Copyright) by David Antion (Pasadena, California) If joy is a fruit of the Holy Spirit, can the unconverted ever have joy? The answer is YES! God has provided many types of joy, gladness, and rejoicing in this mundane life that any or all even non-religious people can have. What a miserable world it would be if there were no occasions for joy! The Bible shows that people can have joy in the person they love (Ecclesiastes 9:9). People have gladness and joy at weddings and a wife should bring her husband joy (Proverbs 5:18). The birth […]
Needed for Justice
(Copyright) by David Antion (Pasadena, California) In the justice system of ancient Israel, the court was open to all and each party presented his/her case before the court. The only evidence considered by the court at that time was given by the witnesses. There was no fingerprint identification. No ability to check DNA or the many other advanced ways to gather evidence. In criminal cases, not less than two witnesses were necessary especially when the accused person stood to lose his/her life. See Deuteronomy 19:15; Numbers 35:30; Deuteronomy 17:2-6. Jesus and the apostle Paul also recognized […]
How They Make Us Sick Trying to Make Us Well
by David Antion (Pasadena, California) Do you have sugar diabetes?Well, it might all depend upon the year. Prior to 1997, if you had a fasting blood sugar level over 140 you were considered to have sugar diabetes. But in 1997 an expert committee on the diagnosis and classification of diabetes lowered this number. After 1997 you had sugar diabetes if you had a fasting blood sugar level over 126. When doctors saw that a person had a blood sugar of over 125, they immediately diagnosed them with sugar diabetes. When diagnosed, they treated them. Even though the patient may not have […]
The Nightmare of Diabetes
by David Antion (Pasadena, California) A client of mine came in with tears this morning. She just got news that her mother, age 69, had only a short time to live and was in the final stages of kidney failure. Her mother has had type II diabetes for years and just a few weeks ago had to have her toes removed from one foot because of gangrene. I personally know of 8 people who are struggling with diabetes and its complications. Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. And it is on the rise […]
Calcium Complexities
by David Antion (Pasadena, California) They say, “Take calcium. Take more. Add citric acid. Add phosphorus.” Did you know that there are three “kinds” of calcium in your body? What do you need to build bone and absorb calcium? Read this article for a thorough and sane approach to the problem of calcium absorption. The most abundant mineral in your body is calcium. You probably know it is plentiful in your bones. But do you know that calcium also has to be in your blood stream? At all times your blood must carry a certain amount of calcium in its […]
Books and Ledgers
by David Antion (Pasadena, California) Record keeping is a natural human function. People buy diaries, picture albums, and ledgers. Today people use such things as Facebook, QuickBooks, and Excel to help them remember and to keep records. Most cities have a Hall of Records containing property records, marriage licenses, death records and divorce records. If you and I keep a record of our lives — the trips, vacations, and special events, does God keep records too? The Bible contains lists of genealogies and records of tribes and families. We read in Psalm 56:8, “You have taken account of my wanderings; Put […]
1 Peter 4:14-15
by David Antion (Pasadena, California) This particular one is a little technical. I don’t enjoy being technical but sometimes I have to do so in order to dig out and uncover the truth of the Scriptures. One of our obstacles, as you probably know, is that the Bible was not originally written in English. The Old Testament was written in Hebrew and Aramaic and the New Testament was written in Greek. We have a task of uncovering not only what the Greek words meant, but also what were the customs and understandings of that time and in that culture. In […]
