| Dear Friends and Brethren, June 14, 2025, is the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States Army, established officially by an act of the Continental Congress on June 14, 1775, less than two months after the Revolutionary War had begun with the battles of Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts. Many individuals from that time to now have served sacrificially in times of peace and war, in the Army and other military services of the United States, nearly a million total estimated to have been killed in the nation’s wars, with many more seriously wounded and maimed. Of course, many millions more have been killed and wounded in other wars among nations throughout mankind’s history. God has allowed this, although had his laws been obeyed from the beginning none of this slaughter and suffering would have occurred. God foresaw, however, that there would be such deadly conflict among nations, and that the people he had chosen, the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, would be opposed by enemies and that he would intervene for them near the end of this age to make his covenant promises of national greatness for the descendants of Israel, and particularly the descendants of Joseph, a reality. For more on this general subject I recommend you read “The United States and Britain in Prophecy” available at cogmessenger.org, and the sources mentioned in that article. Jacob, or Israel, had prophesied of some of what would befall the descendants of the tribe of Joseph, which consisted of the descendants of his two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh. “Joseph is a fruitful bough, A fruitful bough by a well; His branches run over the wall. The archers have bitterly grieved him, Shot at him and hated him. But his bow remained in strength, And the arms of his hands were made strong By the hands of the Mighty God of Jacob (From there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel)” (Genesis 49:22-24). Evidence indicates that the descendants of these two brothers are represented by the British peoples and the United States, though, of course, that doesn’t mean every single individual in these nations are physical descendants of Ephraim or Manasseh. But the prophecy indicates that God would intervene in their affairs and in particular to help them prevail over enemies who hated them and would be at war with them. Though in the Revolutionary war these two brother nations were at odds with one another, most of the period of their existence they have been allies and have supported one another, especially in the twentieth century wars of World War I and World War II. God does at times intervene in the affairs of mankind to work out his purpose, which is ultimately salvation and peace for the world at large, all nations and peoples included. He intervened for Israel in ancient times to free them from slavery in Egypt, and to help them inherit the land of Canaan as he had promised to their forebears. Has he also intervened in modern times to help Britain and America to survive and prevail in desperate wars against enemies who sought to subjugate them, particularly in World War II? I, along with many others, including political and military leaders involved in those wars, believe he has. For today’s sermon, I suggest “Miracles of World War II,” which provides a review of evidence that God has and does intervene in our affairs to work out his purposes.
